For a happy, healthy and well-behaved dog, proper training is key. However, the time and effort involved can be overwhelming and there are considerable pressures and responsibilities involved in training your pet properly. A well-behaved dog comes with a certain commitment from the owner. At All Dogs & Company, we’re here to help. Our effective and valuable dog training services will help you raise your dog to be a happy, healthy and well-behaved companion and family member.
Dog training, like all things, has evolved in recent years. “Old-school” canine training often included pressure from a trainer to “do it their way” — because that was the way they learned. Some force possibly was used — it was “Fido, sit now, or else!” — training with a harsh verbal command or sharp jerks on the dog’s leash, and the use, or improper use, of training equipment for handling the dog. This training created a fearful dog, and often, fearful dogs learn to bite. This did not lend itself to a relationship of equal respect and trust between humans and dogs.
Today, dogs have been unchained from a tree in the yard or brought out of the shed or garage. They are now brought into the family and the household. We learned about positive reinforcement when we trained our beagle, Sarah Anne. We know rewards — verbal praise (“good girl, Sarah”), a belly or ear rub, or small food treats work. Think of it as a paycheck for a job well done — would we work without an incentive? Skills are broken into small steps, explained, demonstrated, practiced, and proofed every week. We use games, tricks, music, tips, humor and fun to positively reinforce learning.
All Dogs & Company is a proud member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, as well as certified Canine Good Citizen evaluators. To learn more about our services, please do not hesitate to call us.
